OpenAI Unveils Jalapeño Chip and GPT-5.6 Family to Boost AI Workloads

What happened

OpenAI announced the development of its first artificial intelligence chip called Jalapeño, specially designed for large language model (LLM) workloads such as ChatGPT and Codex, in collaboration with Broadcom. Additionally, it introduced the GPT-5.6 family, consisting of three variants: Sol, Terra, and Luna. Sol is the flagship model offering a significant improvement over GPT-5.5, Terra delivers similar performance to GPT-5.5 but with double the cost efficiency, and Luna is the most economical option focused on high-volume tasks. The rollout of these models will initially be with limited access to a restricted group of partners, per the request of the U.S. government, although general availability is expected in the coming weeks.

OpenAI also announced improvements to GPT-5.5 Instant, increasing the model's capacity to interpret intentions and handle responses with complex constraints, enhancing experiences in interactions such as shopping and technical support.

Simultaneously, the OpenAI Daybreak program was expanded to accelerate software security through:

  • A security plugin for Codex that identifies, validates, and fixes vulnerabilities.
  • A GPT-5.5-Cyber model specifically for trusted defenders.
  • A new method called Cyber Partner for automated cyber defense.

Why it matters

The development of a dedicated chip like Jalapeño demonstrates OpenAI's strong commitment to optimizing hardware infrastructure for next-generation AI, with potential impacts on performance, cost, and scalability of foundational models. This could reshape the dynamics among technology providers and chip manufacturers in the sector.

The GPT-5.6 family represents progress in diversity and optimization of models for different use cases and business needs, offering balanced options between cost and performance. The selective initial deployment points to increased regulatory scrutiny and control over access to advanced technologies, marking a step toward more active AI regulation.

The security advancements with OpenAI Daybreak indicate that artificial intelligence is advancing not only in creative or conversational capabilities but also in defense and maintaining digital trust, critical aspects for enterprise adoption.

What remains to be confirmed

Although OpenAI has shared general details about Jalapeño and the GPT-5.6 models, precise technical specifications of the chip, exact public launch dates, and the full scope of security features in OpenAI Daybreak are not yet available. Conditions imposed by the U.S. government for the initially restricted access to GPT-5.6 have also not been detailed.
